Residents of Otukpo Protest Rising Killings and Kidnappings

Angry residents of Otukpo in Benue State took to the streets on Tuesday to protest the escalating violence and insecurity in their community. The demonstrations were sparked by the recent killing of Akatu Onche, a respected title holder in Asa II of Otukpo, and the alleged kidnapping of his wife on the same day.

Witnesses reported that a female petty trader was shot and killed in her home in Asa on Monday, while her son was abducted. The surge in violent incidents prompted residents to block major roads in the town on Tuesday morning, holding placards and urging the state government and security forces to take action.

Daniel Oche, one of the protesters, expressed frustrations over the regularity of these attacks, labeling them a “constant recurrence.” He also claimed that electricity supply is often interrupted in the community just before each attack. “This has been happening. We are not safe in our own homes. And have you noticed? NEPA (JEDC) always takes light before every operation. It’s like they don’t want us to see what’s coming,” Oche lamented.

Another resident, Amanyi, stated that the protesters are demanding the removal of the Police Area Commander, accusing him of failing to address the ongoing security issues. “Otukpo LGA is the oldest and most developed area in Idoma land and has been facing security challenges. The youth are holding the area commander responsible for not doing enough to prevent these incidents,” he said.

Amanyi called for the Benue State government to intervene decisively, suggesting that they could deploy more security personnel or appoint a new area commander capable of effectively tackling the region’s security concerns.

Meanwhile, Otukpo Council Chairman Maxwell Ogiri informed journalists via telephone that he was in a security meeting and could not comment on the situation at the time. Efforts to reach Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), CSP Catherine Anene, for comment on the incidents were unsuccessful, as she did not respond to calls or messages.
