The Kogi State Government has reported Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan to security agencies for violating an order prohibiting rallies during Eid-el-Fitr.
The Kogi Central senator defied a curfew imposed by Okehi Local Government chairman Amoka and addressed a rally in her hometown, Ihima, upon returning from a month-long trip abroad.
Chairman Amoka stated that the curfew was implemented “to maintain peace and order, following a ban on all political rallies and unregulated public gatherings within the LGA.”
Furthermore, the Kogi State Police Command had previously warned against rallies and processions. Public Relations Officer SP William Aya explained in a statement that the ban was necessary to prevent potential violence.
The statement read: “In light of intelligence reports indicating security threats in Kogi State and the subsequent ban on all forms of rallies and processions by the Kogi State Government, the Nigeria Police Force, Kogi State Police Command, urges the organizers of the planned rally in Okene to cancel the event in the interest of peace in Kogi State.
“The call for cancellation is essential, as intelligence reveals that some hoodlums intend to hijack the process and disrupt the peace of the State. The Command cannot risk jeopardizing the existing stability that Kogi State currently enjoys.
“Given the security threats associated with the planned rally, the Kogi State Police Command advises the organizers to cancel the event to prevent any breakdown of law and order in the state.”
Akpoti-Uduaghan was suspended from the Senate last month for six months due to what her colleagues characterized as unruly behavior during plenary sessions. She had protested when her seat was changed and accused Senate President Godswill Akpabio of sexual harassment.
