Police Withdraw Emir Sanusi’s Invitation, Launch Probe in Kano

The Nigeria Police Force has withdrawn its earlier invitation to Alhaji Aminu Sanusi for questioning over a Sallah Day incident in Kano State.

The incident, which occurred on March 30, 2025, involved a post-Eid procession led by Sanusi on horseback, allegedly violating a prior peace agreement. This led to a confrontation that resulted in the death of one person, Usman Sagiru, and left several others injured.

Initially invited to Abuja for questioning, the police reversed the decision following consultations with key stakeholders. According to police spokesperson ACP Muyiwa Adejobi, the move was made “to avoid politicization and misinterpretation of police actions.”

Instead, operatives from the Force Intelligence Department (FID) will visit Kano to obtain Sanusi’s statement.

Adejobi noted that both disputed emirs in the state—Alhaji Ado Bayero and Alhaji Lamido Sanusi—had earlier agreed not to hold separate Durbar festivals during Sallah to avoid unrest. However, Sanusi’s horseback procession after Eid prayers allegedly sparked tensions that the police had sought to prevent.

The police say arrests have already been made, and investigations will continue, with a promise that “all individuals found culpable will be brought to justice.”

The IGP reaffirmed that the force remains committed to justice, neutrality, and professionalism in handling the matter.
