IGP Summons Emir Sanusi II Over Sallah Day Violence in Kano

KANO — The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has summoned the 16th Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, to the Force Intelligence Department in Abuja for questioning over a violent incident that took place during the recent Eid-el-Fitr celebration.

The clash, which occurred during the Emir’s return from the Eid prayer at Kofar Mata, led to the death of a vigilante, Surajo Rabiu, and left another, Aminu Suleman, severely injured.

A formal letter addressed to Emir Sanusi, and signed by Commissioner of Police (Operations) CP Olajide Ibitoye on behalf of the Deputy Inspector General of Police, stated that the meeting is scheduled for 10:00 AM on Tuesday, April 8, 2025, at the Force Intelligence Department in Abuja.

“I have the directives of the Inspector General of Police… to invite you for an investigative meeting with regards to an incident that occurred during the Sallah celebration within your domain,” the letter reads.

The incident reportedly unfolded when local guards were escorting Emir Sanusi II’s convoy back from the Eid ground. During the procession, unidentified attackers allegedly targeted the entourage, resulting in casualties among the vigilante team.

In the aftermath, police arrested a suspect identified as Usman Sagiru, believed to be involved in the attack. Authorities also confirmed that the injured vigilante, Aminu Suleman, was rushed to Murtala Mohammed Specialists Hospital for urgent treatment.

Kano State Police spokesperson, SP Abdullahi Haruna, confirmed the incident, stating that investigations are ongoing to determine the motive and those responsible.

The invitation to the Emir underscores the seriousness with which security forces are treating the matter, as they work to unravel the full details behind the violence that marred what should have been a peaceful religious celebration.
