The Federal Government yesterday destroyed over one million doses of expired AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccines.
This, it said, is in line with its resolve to ensure that only quality, safe and effective vaccines are administered to Nigerians to combat the sundry COVID-19 variants.
It explained that against the advice of some experts to use the vaccines, regardless of their expiration dates, it decided to destroy them for the safety of Nigerians.
Stating that the available short shelf-life vaccines in the country are effective and safe, it noted that its decision to accept and effectively utilise the vaccines safe the country over $40 million.
Executive Director of the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) Dr. Faisal Shuaib stated these in Abuja, during the official handing over of 1,066,214 doses of expired COVID-19 vaccines to National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) to be destroyed.
