Sir David Attenborough, the famed British broadcaster and naturalist, has broken the record of fastest person to reach one million followers on Instagram.
According to the Guinness World of Records, the beloved 94-year-old natural historian dethroned previous record holder, actress Jennifer Aniston, by getting to the seven-figure count in four hours and 44 minutes.
His impressive time was 31 minutes faster than the Emmy Award-winning actress, who last year reached the benchmark in five hours and 16 minutes.
Attenborough, the unmistakable voice behind shows such as “Planet Earth,” “Blue Planet,” and “Our Planet,” used his first post to explain why he finally decided to join the photo and video sharing platform.
“I’ve been appearing on radio and television for the past 60 years,” he began. “But this is my first time on Instagram.”
He said he fell compelled to explore the medium “because, as we all know, the world is in trouble. Continents are on fire. Glaciers are melting. Coral reefs are dying. Fish are disappearing from our oceans. The list goes on and on. Saving our planet is now a communications challenge.”
“Over the next few weeks, I’ll be recording messages to explain what the problems are and how we can deal with them,” he added.
About a day after the veteran broadcaster joined the Instagram revolution, his follower count has passed 3.3 million, about one tenth of Aniston’s 35.7 million — but still way behind the most-followed person overall, Portuguese soccer player Cristiano Ronaldo, who has 238 million followers.
